Victoria Olayanju Abimbola Solar was born in Lagos, Nigeria to parents Francis Babatunde Solar and Victoria Omoyeni Oni. Education was important to Victoria and her family. She was excited to start school at Salvation Primary where she developed her love for learning. An excellent student, she went on to Oriel Girls High School and then to Nursing School.
Nursing was the perfect career since she loved to care for people. During this time Victoria or “Bola” as many close family and friends called her, always looked after and cared for many siblings and cousins. She was proud that her “job” was to ensure that they home safely and she loved spending time with family. Her relationship with God (Salvation Army Church) and family were the central forces in Victoria’s life. She was particularly close with her Grandmother and told many stories of how that relationship was a huge influence on her.
Nursing and an adventurous spirit compelled Victoria at age 19 to leave her beloved homeland and continue studies in England. During her time there, she made many friends from all over the world and traveled extensively, especially in Europe, all while completing her studies to become a Registered Nurse. One of her favorite places was Spain, she loved the place, the people, the music and the Paella. Years later she still couldn’t pass it up on any Spanish menu.
In the 1960s, Victoria moved to NY where she later married, settled and started her family. She was a loving, nurturing, caring, and all around amazing mother who shared her love for travel and adventure with her children Aidevo and Abi. Family vacations were often fun-filled trips to Disney or exploring different parts of the country.
Being a mother was one of her greatest accomplishments and she made sure every birthday was celebrated, every scrape bandaged, every tear wiped, every bad day ended with a big hug, kiss and a joke to make you smile again.
Her career that started with midwifery and ended as a visiting nurse included work at nursing homes and a number of prestigious hospitals such as New York Hospital, Mount Sinai and others. Nursing was her life for nearly 60 years, and she was proud of her work and professional accomplishments. Her patients adored her and colleagues often became very dear friends. “Vicky” as she was endearingly called by many of her US friends and colleagues traveled the world, cooked delicious and memorable meals and enjoyed her friends.
Victoria gave all she had in this life - to her family, to her friends, to anyone in need. She opened her home, her wallet, and her heart to share the blessings from God that she held dear. She will be missed.
Victoria is survived by her children Aidevo Ihonde and Abi Ihonde; Solar siblings Mrs. Adenike Sodade, Mr. Oladipo Solar, Mrs. Subuola Alabi, Mrs. Adeyinka Oshodi and Mrs. Iyabo Adesina; Oni/ George sibling Gbola Oluwole, loving grandchildren and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
