Ruth Olga Evans- Harrison Obituary

  • THE BEGINNING – Ruth Olga Evans was born in Ewarton, St. Catherine, Jamaica to Edward Ogle Evans and Beatrice Plunket on February 3, 1921. She was the oldest of 8 siblings. Rubie, Glen, Evon, Pearl, Joyce, Madge and Manly.
  • CHILDHOOD – Ruth was raised in Ewarton and went to primary school. She was very smart and could recite poems up to date. She was a seamstress and a homemaker. Her hobbies were gardening, planting flowers and vegetables. She was an avid reader. All her teachers loved her and she even skipped a few grades.
  • WORK/SERVICE – In her later years, at age 60, Ruth took a CNA course and worked in the nurse field taking care of children as well as lite house work. She went on to care for a young couple with their little child in Cayman Islands and then Austin, Texas and later worked in Florida. She held this position for a few years and took great pride in her profession. Ruth was adored by her co-workers. So much so, her employer in Texas sponsored her to come to North America. Her prized accomplishment was earning her citizenship. Ruth formed lifetime friendships with all that came in contact with her, especially the bonds she made as a member of her Seven Day Adventists Church.
  • FAMILY LIFE – Ruth met Patrick Harrison who was from Ocho Rios. One day, there was a group of young guys who told him there was a very pretty girl. Patrick asked them why they didn’t talk to her and they replied that they were too shy. So Patrick went and talked to her and walked her home. They have been together ever since! They married in April, 1947, and stayed married for 69 years! They had ten children together: Wilkie, Lettice, Eveth, Molly, Erron, Julie, Kelvin, Deata, Roxie, and Doc. Together they were revered as important members of the Seven Day Adventists Church. Ruth was honored by being on the board of Trustees.
  • PERSONAL DETAILS – Ruth was a loving soul. She cared about the wellbeing of all those around her. She loved sharing her knowledge of the Lord. She was an avid reader, reading was her favorite hobby and she would read every day. She remembered almost every verse in the Bible. Ruth was a lifelong vegetarian. The things that will be most missed are the moments where she was laughing. Her face was so pretty when she smiles! She was strong willed, determined and feisty. She tells it like it is! These qualities were also instilled in her children who she so loved dearly.
  • DEPARTURE – During her lifetime, Ruth adopted a lot of people that became more like family. O’Brien was one who would watch after her and her husband to provide comfort and care. Things she could no longer do anymore due to age, O’Brien would assist with. Ruth was preceded in death by her husband Patrick Harrison in October, 2016. After his death Ruth spent the next 5 years with her daughter Julie in Florida and then daughter Roxie in Connecticut. Ruth’s last stop was during the last 4 years, with her daughter Lettice in the Bronx, New York where she transitioned at home. She is survived by her siblings: Pearl, Joyce, Madge and Manly. Also her children: Wilkie, Lettice, Eveth, Molly, Erron, Julie, Deata, Roxie, and Doc. A host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a few great-great grandchildren and friends who also loved and will miss Ruth.
  • LEGACY – During Ruth’s last years she spent quality time with her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and her Church brother and sisters (in person or on the phone). Ruth survived the pandemic! Even during a pandemic, together as a family we would celebrate birthdays and her 100 th birthday via zoom was a hit! She would often have her church members visit her. Brother Wallace would call her and do services over the phone. She was always very strong and her strength speaks volumes throughout her life. She transitioned with no money debt, without owing anyone! She never borrowed money and always saved. Ruth was loved and adored by many.
  • REFLECTIVE WRITNGS – Mother’s Poem (1920’s): I’m asked to make a little speech, to welcome all who’ve come tonight. I can’t think why they’ve chosen me, but still I’ll try to do it right. These boys and girls are all prepared you see, and if I keep them waiting long, they’ll do some awful things to me.
