Madeline Bihuniak Braverman was born in the Bronx, NY, on September 19, 1922, to Anna and Dimitri Bihuniak. She had 5 siblings. In high school, she was an excellent student and received a college scholarship. She was the first girl in her family to go to college, attending Hunter College at night while working during the day. Later, she got her Master’s degree in Social Work at Columbia University and met her husband, Fred, at the Union Settlement House where they were both residing as graduate students. Fred and Madeline were married in 1955 at the Unitarian Community Church in Manhattan, as they were raised in two different religions.
Madeline then worked for 22 years as a Certified Social Worker in many different schools in New York City. She loved serving families, in her own words “helping others help themselves.” She adored children her whole life. She had two daughters, Susan and Dina, who gave her the best gifts of all: Lindsay, Alexa, Matthew, Raphael and Christopher.
She cherished the many roles she played during her lifetime: “Daughter, Sister, Sister-in-Law, Cousin, Granddaughter, Aunt, Godmother, Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Mother-in-Law, Great Aunt, Certified Social Worker, Alumna.”
She touched many people with her love and generosity. She will be greatly missed.
