Josephine Overstreet

Josephine was born in Savannah, GA on September 9, 1935, and was the daughter of Pearl Greene and Joseph Wright. Pearl worked at the Savannah Sugar Refinery while Joseph was a native of the Bahamas and worked as a Longshoreman on the ship.

Josephine attended school in Savannah and loved: being in parades, cheerleading, majorettes, skating, being with her cousins, and participating in Easter plays at the family church – Saint Mark Baptist Church. Josephine accepted the lord early in her life, and always put God first – it was the epitome of everything she did.

Josephine had a strong work ethic which she was taught early in her life. The saying was an honest day’s work for an honest dollar. She worked at Savannah Linen where she became the supervisor of the laundry department. Josephine and her former husband AL wanted a better life and moved the family to Bronx New York. Josephine worked various jobs in New York but found her passion in taking care of the sick. She was a private duty companion for many years where she traveled to various places with her patients, which she loved. When she stopped private duty, she went to work for Sprain Brook Manor Nursing Home in Yonkers NY, and worked at Grand Manor Nursing Home for 37 years until her retirement in 2015 at the age of 79.

Josephine was a member and Mother of the Church at St. Mary’s non-denomination church in

Jersey City. She was also affiliated with Second Southern Baptist Church in Bronx, New York. And lastly, a member of the Eastern Star organization.

Josephine leaves behind her children Linda, Larry, Rena, and her son Ken who preceded her in death, grandchildren, Joey, Felicia, Duane, Jessica, Karla, and great-grandchildren JaReed, Jailen, Kaelyn, Niasia, Mylin, Brylin, Christopher, Ja’vier, Justice, one niece Mychell and host of other relatives.
