Mother Jessie Marie House, affectionately known as Marie, was born May 5, 1949, in Burgaw, North
Carolina, to the late Jesse James and Millie Jane McKenzie, the oldest of seven children.
In 1953, her parents relocated to Brooklyn, NY, to build a better life for the family. After graduating from
Maxwell High School and furthering her education in college, she enrolled in Borough of Manhattan
Community College, completing a certificate program to become a Direct Care worker providing care for
intellectually disabled people. A good work ethic provided a wide variety of work experiences; a factory
worker for Ideal Toy Company, Cabs Home Health Aids, and at an Independent Living facility where she
worked until she retired.
In junior high school, she met Johnnie H. House; years later, they were married and began a family. As
a dedicated mother to Shewanna, TieEsha, and Shatasha, she held them close to her heart at all
times. The family often traveled from New York to North Carolina to visit family and friends.
Marie gave her life to the Lord at an early age. She worshipped with numerous ministries; Revival Time
UHCA of Bronx, NY, -under the late Pastor Sheffield; Tabernacle of Prayer for All People - under the late
Apostle Johnnie Washington, Jamaica, NY; God’s Outreach Center under Pastor Tonya Holloway,
Brooklyn, NY and she enjoyed the ministry of Apostle Sheila V. McCray of the International Gospel of
Peace Deliverance Center, Brooklyn NY.
Mother House is affectionally known as the missionary, the prayer warrior, the solider, the mother, the
praiser, the servant, and a friend to many. As a missionary, she visited the sick as a warrior she prayed
for everybody. It was her joy to pray with her grandchildren and close with the song “My Grandma
Prayed for Me.” She not only loved her family, she had a special place in her heart for the youth. She
took time to teach, laugh and play; however, she would also tell them what was right or wrong and was
adamant about what she said.
At one time, Marie and two of her sisters and a few cousins lived in the same building, where they
enjoyed cooking and family gatherings. Marie lived to have fun and extended herself to those who
needed her help. Marie was full of love, and her family loved her the same. Her smile and laughter
were so big and bright that it affected us all. She would give of herself and expect nothing in return
because that is how big her heart was for the people she loved and cared for. She collected people like
she collected her pocketbooks.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Jesse and Millie McKenzie; two sisters, Maggie L. McKenzie
and Theresa Kincaide, and her brother Terry McKenzie; and her special friend Theodore Olds
On May 11, 2023, Marie took her rightful place in the open arms of the Lord. She leaves to cherish her
memory three daughters: Shewanna House - Brooklyn, NY; Tie’ Esha House - Brooklyn, NY and
Shatasha House, Raleigh NC; Three sisters, Virginia Stubbs - Bronx NY, Deborah Critten – Ashville,
NC, and Renee Thompson (Greg) - Bronx NY; One sister-in-law Esse McKenzie -Queens NY; Seven
grandchildren, Jerry Jr, Tie’ Esha, Kiione, Kairra, Ja’Tiyah-Amor, Makalya, and Ja’Vaiyah-Marie. Three
additional granddaughters, Starquasia, Lamecca, and Niara, Two great-grands, Kayshawn and Kaymya,
and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and one of many goddaughters Chiffon Davidson, relatives, and
friends.
Our family loved and cherished our mother/grandmother/great-grandmother, and cousins dearly. She
bestowed much love, wisdom, and encouragement on us, sharing much laughter, hugs, and kisses
which she enjoyed giving throughout her lifetime.
We love you to infinity!
