Mr. Harry Capers, son of the late Henry & Winnie (McMillian) Capers, was born in Sumter, SC on January 28, 1940. He departed this life on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, at St. Joseph Hospital in Yonkers, NY.
Harry left home after he turned 18. He first went to Myrtle Beach and became a cook. He stayed in Myrtle Beach for about 2 yrs. before returning home for a brief time. His Sister Blanche was already in NY when she asked him to come stay while he got on his feet. That was the beginning of his life in New York. He found a job at Goff Security where he worked for 5 yrs. until he found a job, his calling at American Banana Bronx, NY moving produce around the country. Eventually becoming Manager of Operations. He retired after 37 years to enjoy time with his family and his community. Harry’s love for flowers, also allowed him to become a landscaper seasonally while working at American Banana. In Retirement, he organized block parties and community events. For 2yrs. he ran a community room for the neighborhood kids in Mt. Vernon, NY, where he hosted basketball games, trips, etc. along with gathering donations for the food pantry. Harry was always involved in community affairs and events.
In addition to his parents Harry was predeceased by his longtime Companion, Irene. Brothers, Willie, Abraham, Thomas, John Henry II, and Hayes. Sisters, Martha, Maggie, Margaret, Rosa Lee, Lula Mae, Maggie Mae, and Blanche. Surviving Harry are 4 daughters. Shirlene Capers, Crystal White-Capers, Darlene Grimsley, Tammy Ann Lawson (Charles). 9 grandchildren, Willie White (Illeana), Sakeem Capers (Tiara), Christian White (Tiarra), Casey Bickers, Elisha White-Coldman (Leonard), Erica White, Aqua Capers, Joanne Grimsley and Marquis White. 11 great- grandchildren. 2 brothers, Wayne Capers (Margaret), James Capers (Helen). 1 sister Grace Wright (James) A host of Nieces, Nephews, cousins, generations of family relatives and friends.
Later in life, he accepted Christ as his Savior and virtually joined Mechanicsville UME Church in Sumter, SC. His greatest enjoyment was service to his family and his community. He used his God-given talents in service to others. To give rather than to receive was his way of serving God.
