Francis M. Tubridy

January 8, 1966 — May 31, 2021

Francis Michael Tubridy was born to Catherine A. Kenny Tubridy and John M. Tubridy at Misericordia Hospital in Bronx, New York on January 8, 1966.  He departed this life peacefully at home and in the presence of his family on May 31, 2021.  Francis was always known for his gentleness, kindness, intelligence, humor, and his love and devotion to God and to his family.  He leaves behind his wife, Nelly Tubridy, two children: Rachel and Samuel Tubridy, two sisters:  Brigid Callaghan and Catherine Sabat, and a host of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, cousins - here and in Ireland, and friends who will all sorely miss him.

Francis grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Upper Manhattan, New York.  As a boy he loved to draw, watch and play baseball and basketball, read comics, and play guitar.  He and his family attended Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Church where he was active as an altar boy, taught CCD, participated in the youth folk group, and attended school.  When not in school he enjoyed good times with his neighborhood friends playing Star Trek and ball in the school yard and in Fort Tryon Park.  Summers were spent with family and friends on Beach 115th Street in Rockaway Park, New York where he enjoyed softball, frisbee, swimming, biking and long walks on the boardwalk, along the beach and by the bay. He graduated from Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Elementary School as valedictorian and went on to attend Regis in Upper Manhattan – a competitive, all scholarship private high school which still ranks among the top catholic high schools in the U.S.  There he was successful on the debate team, excelled in every subject, and graduated as valedictorian of his class.  High school kept him too busy for much else but his friends still reminisce about the fun they all had going with him to his Regis dances.  After high school, Francis was admitted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology which ranks among the most prestigious academic institutions in the world.  After completing one year he encountered many challenges that prevented him from continuing there.  Returning home, he chose a road less travelled, seeking a simpler, quieter and more meaningful life outside the distractions and pressures of life.  His outlook was best expressed in the words of his high school yearbook inscription, “What a man is in the eyes of God, that he is and no more.”  This journey eventually led him to Fountain House – a national nonprofit organization that fights to improve the lives of people living with mental illness.  Here a beautiful new page in his life began as he was able to find the support he needed as well as extend that support to others.  Over time, he advanced to become a part of the Board of Directors and held that position for three years. He also traveled with Fountain House to Russia, Sweden, and Finland teaching other countries about the successful Mental Health Clubhouse model.  During his time at Fountain House, Francis also met his beautiful wife, Nelly, also an active member. They married on January 19, 2002 and continued to be very active in their roles at Fountain House.  Their life focus together soon turned, however, to family when they became the proud parents of their beautiful children Rachel in 2003 and Sammy in 2007.  These two exceptional young people will both be valedictorians at their own respective graduation ceremonies this year.  Rachel will be going on to attend New York University and Sammy will attend The Bronx High School of Science.

In this life Francis excelled in everything he did.  He was an inspiration and a spiritual influence on everyone around him.  He was a beloved husband to his wife - her friend, love, and father of two wonderful children.  In the words of his children he was a devoted father who worked hard to care for his family and raised them in the admonition of the Lord.  He loved to talk about and teach his family about Jesus whom he loved and served.  His was a life well lived and we look forward to meeting him again in the presence of the Lord in heaven.
