Errol Sangster

May 25, 1945 — February 20, 2025

Errol George Sangster was born on May 25, 1945, in Coker, St. Elizabeth, Jamaica. Errol was the eldest son of
James and Margaret Sangster and the third of nine children. From his early days in the district of Thornton,
where he attended Thornton All Age School, Errol demonstrated a spirit of love, determination and hard work
that would carry him throughout his life.
After his early schooling, Errol pursued his passion for craftsmanship at Cobbler Trade School in Spaulding,
Jamaica. This foundation would serve him well as he navigated various careers, ultimately spending much of
his life on Orange Street in Kingston, Jamaica. In that vibrant community, he formed countless friendships, and
his presence was a source of joy for many. On some Saturdays, Errol could be found at the Seven Day Adventist
Church on North Street, nurturing his faith and community ties. He learned these values from his mother at an
early age, when she would make sure he and his siblings were in church on Saturdays despite their resistance.
For many years, Errol worked as a seaman on the bauxite boat  “Louis” spending long periods away in
“foreign” visiting places like Germany. Doreen recalls that as a child, his returns were always met with
excitement and joy, especially from the children in the yard. His mother, Margaret, would proudly announce to
everyone that “Errol was home.” Later, he found his calling as a cook on the tugboat in Kingston Harbor, where
he showcased his exceptional culinary skills. Errol was not just a cook; he was an artist in the kitchen, creating
meals that brought people together and were memorable. Errol taught his niece June to make pudding on one of
his visits to Ocho Rios. He said to her, “June a so wi mek pudding a country you nuh, a hell a top and hell a
bottom and hallelujah inna di middle.” A memory she will hold dear.  That was Errol; he has a unique way to
bring fun and laughter.
After retiring from the sea, Errol turned his talents to shoemaking, crafting fashionable sandals, shoes, and bags.
He later embraced farming in St. Elizabeth, pouring his heart and soul into every endeavor. Errol was a hard
worker, and his dedication was evident in everything he did.
But above all, Errol’s greatest love was his daughter, Kesha. Their bond was unbreakable. In a time before
phones, he would often surprise his siblings with visits to Ocho Rios, spending cherished nights with his big
sister, Una, with Kesha always by his side. He would joyfully announce his arrival with, “Una mi deh ya you
nuh a me and Kesha,” and those moments are now precious memories that we hold dear. Whether it was
popping up at Doreen’s house and being spotted under the orange tree by Ashleigh, Errol’s visits were filled
with love and laughter. Errol will let you know that the sweetest orange with green skin is by Doreen’s house.
Errol was a true family man, selfless and devoted. He would travel between St. Elizabeth, Kingston, and
Montego Bay, always attending to the needs of others. His calm disposition and warm smile could light up any
room. Even in his final days, when his body told a different story, he would reassure us with his signature
phrase, “mi alright man, mi nuh too bad.” That was Errol—a fighter, a beacon of strength.
On February 20, 2025, Errol succumbed to his illness, leaving behind a legacy of love and strength. He was
preceded in death by beloved parents, James and Margaret. He leaves behind his cherished daughter Kesha, her
mother Marcia, granddaughter Chanel, his sisters Una, Frederica, Eunice (Monica), and Sharon, brothers Ricky,
Dudley, Collington (Talens), and Ernest, along with numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and
friends.
Errol, you are gone but will never be forgotten. Your spirit, laughter, and love will live on in our hearts forever.
Thank you for the memories, the lessons, and the love you shared with us all. Rest in peace.
