Efrain Quintana entered our lives on November 8, 1942, born to Felicita Prieto de Quintana and Silvano Quintana in El Barrio, NYC. His passing came on March 18, 2025.
In childhood, he enjoyed Stickball and Basketball with life-long and friends who shared his passion for Latin music. He was proud of his Puerto Rican heritage and throughout his life, dedicated his efforts in promoting it, together with members of other Caribbean cultures.
One highlight that reflected this dedication was the takeover of Hostos Community College in the Bronx which was slated to be closed by then-Mayor Ed Koch. With a core group consisting of friends, Ramon Jimenez, Nilsa Saniel, Vicente Alba, Mario and Maria Serrano, State & City representatives, the media, Hostos professors and students, were successful in that struggle to keep Hostos Community College open for minorities and other under-served populations in the Bronx.
Thereafter, he completed his Master of Arts Degree in Labor Studies from the Graduate Center of CUNY in 2013. Lastly, he worked at Riker’s Island as Counselor II and as Union Representative there for 25 years until his retirement.
Efrain is survived by his sister, Evangeline Quintana, and loving nephews, Steve (pre-deceased), Leonard Jr., Kenneth, John Anthony, Joseph, and nieces, Eva Marie and Felisha Jeni.
His siblings (pre-deceased):
Jennie Quintana, Leonard Quintana, Sr.,
Silvano Quintana and Mary Luz Velazquez.
For the rest of his life, he continued in the struggle to uplift his community and supporters.
