Dominique Elijah Nanton transitioned peacefully from this world on April 6, 2021, at Sloane Kettering Memorial Hospital. Dominique was born on March 17, 1992 to Tarvatta Simmons-Nanton and Ezra Nanton Jr. He is affectionately known as “Dom “ or “Domo”. Dominique spent his first years living in the Edenwald section of the Bronx with his family.
Some years later, Dominique moved to Harlem with his family. He attended elementary school on the Upper West Side of Manhattan until 6th Grade. He then attended Frederick Douglass Academy II (FDA) in Harlem, NY from 7th grade to 12th grade. While at FDA II, Dominique was an active member of the school community and formed lifelong friendships. He was on the Wadleigh Tigers Basketball team for his four years of high school and helped lead them to the PSAL AA Borough Championship. He served as a Peer Leader for the College Summit program and was voted Prom King of his senior class.
After graduating from high school in 2010, Dominique attended Utica College in Upstate New York, where he majored in Marketing and continued his love of basketball by joining the school’s basketball team. In addition to academics and sports, Dominique became a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated, Omicron Alpha chapter; following in the footsteps of his father. Dominque served as the chapter’s Membership Chairman and President.
After Dominique received his degree from Utica College, he continued his passion for basketball with his fellow Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) peers and high school friends to create Diamond in the Rough Sports Agency (D.T.R.) He traveled oversees and passed his exam to become an official Federal International Basketball Association (FIBA) agent. During Dominique’s time residing in Utica, he met and fell in love with his life partner, Rachel McDaniel. Rachel has supported and cared for Dominique during the past few years and we are grateful for her presence.
Dominique worked at Nike in NYC where he honed in on his customer service skill and transitioned to Enterprise Car Services in Utica, New York where he perfected those skills. Most recently, he was employed at Bank of America. He elevated to corporate America and was enthused to take on this new venture. Dominique was always excited to learn new things that provided him an opportunity to grow professionally and personally. He was proud of his accomplishments in completing Momentum Education and other leadership development programs.
Dominique was a jovial young man who was known for his sense of humor and silliness. He believed in peace and always created an opportunity for resolution, kindness, and friendship. It was impossible to be upset with Dominique for more than 10 minutes because he would look at you with those puppy dog eyes and you would eventually give in. Dominique lived a life of community service from a young age from exposure by his parents, to eventually initiating projects and tasks on his own. He was a young man who had empathy for others and offered compassion to others; even through his most difficult times. Dominique believed in “passing on a blessing”.
Dominique was preceded in death by his maternal grandmother, Constance Simmons; Maternal aunt, Tara Lane; cousin, Paris Lane. He leaves to treasure his precious memories, his beloved mother: Tarvatta Simmons-Nanton; father: Ezra A. Nanton, Jr., brother: Dylan Nanton; life partner: Rachel McDaniel; stepmother: Joyce Dembry-Nanton; stepbrother: Travis Gallishaw; grandparents: Ezra A Nanton, Sr. and Dorothy Nanton; Uncle: Maurice Nanton; Grand aunts, Theresa Simmons and Peggy Forest. Aunts: Nadine Nanton, Teewana Henderson, Tiaheke Simmons and Marie Nanton; his first cousins: Unique Graham, Jonnique Graham, Brandi Lane, Stevie Lane, Nia Cleopatra Nanton; and numerous other cousins, family members, fraternity brothers and friends. It took a village to raise such an amazing young man and we are appreciative for everyone who was a part of Dominique’s village. In being the mentor and role model that he was, Dominique also leaves behind his moldable and younger cousins: Kennedy Bass and Ryan Rivers. We will definitely miss him in the physical. However, Dom’s spirit, vibes, and interactions will always remain present in not only the aforementioned lives, but in all of the lives that he came in contact with.
