It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Constantin Nelson Muipatayi Muamba on December 29, 2024, in New York City.
Constantin is survived by his children, Augustin and Ella, and their mother, Dena. He is also survived by his sisters Earlyne, Domba Jackie, Anastasie, and Ndaya; his brother Mahumba; and his stepmother Yolanda Divert. He will be dearly missed by his nieces and nephews: Jelani, Davun, Gregory, and Nora, as well as many loved ones in New York, including Ke’Yonna Johnson and her son Carter, and countless family members in Kinshasa, DRC. He was predeceased by his father, Jackson Muamba, Sr.; mother, Rose Tshibuabua; brother, Jackson Muamba, Jr.; and stepmother, Georgette Muamba.
Constantin was a consummate salesman with a long career in furniture, design, home interiors, and design-build contracting. He worked with notable multinational companies such as Palazetti, Kohler, Hansgrohe and DGA Security. Throughout his life and at the time of his passing, he worked to develop his own, independent design-build company, Back40Development.
A lifelong learner, Constantin was deeply passionate about history, world politics, economics, and urban development. He loved engaging in thought-provoking conversations about philosophy and enjoyed listening to music—especially classical jazz, American standards, and anything else that moved him. He was also an exceptional cook, delighting in preparing meals for his family. His love for design and interiors was evident in both his home and his personal style.
To know Constantin was to engage in rich conversations and share in laughter. Gregarious and engaging, he left a lasting impression on everyone he met with his quick wit and bright sense of humor. For many, he was a trusted source of knowledge and guidance. His many nicknames—Muipatayi, Nely, Nelson, Konnie, Dad, Papa, Stanley, and Tino—reflect the diverse roles he played in the lives of those who loved him.
Born on August 28, 1963, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, Constantin moved to New York City at the age of five with his father. He built a full and vibrant life in New York but often dreamt of returning to his birthplace to reconnect with family and establish a lasting legacy. His children and siblings plan to honor this dream by taking a family trip in the future to return his ashes to Congo.
Constantin’s family invites friends and loved ones to join them in remembering him and celebrating his life at 1pm on January 18th in St. Martin Chapel at The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City.
His legacy of love, laughter, and wisdom will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
