Carmen Aragonez

With profound sadness, we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Carmen Nydia Aragonez.
On August 27th, 2021, an angel returned to heaven at the age of 79 years. The daughter of Evangelia and Victor Aragonez, Carmen was born on July 11th, 1942, in the neighborhood of La Perla in the town of Old San Juan, Puerto Rico. She lost her mother at the tender age of 7, at which time her aunt took her in. In 1957, at the age of 15, unfortunate circumstances led her to migrate to the United States, where she lived with extended family. While residing in New Jersey, she met and fell in love with a young man named Santos Cosme. This man proved to be her husband until his death separated them in 1991. This marriage created a family and nurtured four children: Magdalena Cosme, Santos Cosme, Manuel Cosme, and Maritsa Cosme.
After the passing of her husband, she continued caring for her family. She admirably took in anyone who needed help without judgment or question.

Her four children blessed her with seventeen grandchildren. She equally loved all of her grandchildren and raised three of them from infancy: Maritza Del Carmen, Justin, and William. She was also a significant part of Wyomi, Luis, Walter, Pricilla, and Kricilla's upbringing as she also raised them from childhood. Her remaining grandchildren: Alexander, Alexandra, Santos, Jonathan, Natalia, Sabrina, Hillary, Michelle, and Chris Lamuel were always close to her heart and prayers.
From her grandchildren, she was blessed with thirteen great-grandchildren: Wyomi Evangelina, Christallee, Destiny, Jadin, Luis, Hugo, Jeremiah, Betsylee, Kali, Ismael, Messiah, Alora, and Gisele whom she loved and cherished. From her great-grandchildren, she was blessed with seven great-great-grandchildren: Joel, Victor, Josiah, Nailah, Ava, Amari, and Jaylee.

As a child, Carmen was an avid churchgoer and said that it was then that she formulated her relationship with God. On one occasion during church service, before the offering collection occurred, she thought of all those in pain and helpless situations. Saddened by not having anything to offer, Carmencita knew the power of prayer could manifest the help she couldn't give. So in desperation, she squeezed her eyes shut, put her hands together in prayer, and made a request to the Lord.

"Father God, thank you for everything, and thank you for your love. I want to ask you something great, my God.  Would you please help me be able to help those unfortunate ones? Would you mind helping me with something to offer the basket to reach those in need—the homeless, poor, sick, disabled, and those with hunger? Please, God, help me be able to help. Amen“

Upon opening her eyes, she saw something placed on the platform where she was on her knees. She saw a shiny penny! With great joy, Carmencita picked up the penny and waited for the offering basket. As it made its way toward her, she extended her tiny hand towards the basket and let the penny fall into the basket with great kindness and humility. This continued weekly until her young mind thought it would be okay to buy candy with the penny instead of offering it to the needy. She noticed her human error the following week when the penny didn't appear after her prayer. She acknowledged her mistake and asked God for forgiveness. Although the penny never appeared again, God assured Carmencita that he would listen to her requests and send her help according to her supplications, no matter the circumstances. Carmen testified to the great relationship she had with God. She said that Papa Dios listens to our heart, our pain, our glorification of him, our joys, our requests, and also our last breath.

Let us carry Doña Carmen's memory in our hearts through acts of kindness and humility. For even in her final days, she never once prayed for herself. Instead, she prayed for the safekeeping of her family, friends, and the hospital staff, helping those in need.

May her soul rest in that great peace which only the love of the Almighty can give.

Doña Carmen Nydia Aragonez

Con profunda tristeza anunciamos el fallecimiento de nuestra querida madre y abuela, Carmen Nydia Aragonez.
El 27 de agosto de 2021, un ángel regresó al cielo a la edad de 79 años. Hija de Evangelia y Víctor Aragonez, Carmen nació el 11 de julio de 1942 en el barrio de La Perla en el pueblo del Viejo San Juan, Puerto Rico. Perdió a su madre a la tierna edad de 7 años, momento en el que su tía la acogió. En 1957, a la edad de 15 años, circunstancias desafortunadas la llevaron a emigrar a los Estados Unidos, donde vivía con su familia extendida. Mientras residía en New Jersey, conoció y se enamoró de un joven llamado Santos Cosme. Este hombre resultó ser su esposo hasta que su muerte los separó en 1991. Este matrimonio creó una familia y crió a cuatro hijos: Magdalena Cosme, Santos Cosme, Manuel Cosme y Maritsa Cosme.
Después del fallecimiento de su esposo, continuó cuidando a su familia. Admitió admirablemente a cualquiera que necesitara ayuda sin juzgar ni cuestionar.

Sus cuatro hijos la bendijeron con diecisiete nietos. Amaba por igual a todos sus nietos y crió a tres de ellos desde la infancia: Maritza Del Carmen, Justin y William. También fue una parte importante de la crianza de Wyomi, Luis, Walter, Pricilla y Kricilla, ya que también los crió desde la infancia. Sus nietos restantes: Alexander, Alexandra, Santos, Jonathan, Natalia, Sabrina, Hillary, Michelle y Chris Lamuel siempre estuvieron cerca de su corazón y sus oraciones. De sus nietos, fue bendecida con trece bisnietos: Wyomi Evangelina, Christallee, Destiny, Jadin, Luis, Hugo, Jeremiah, Betsylee, Kali, Ismael, Messiah, Alora y Gisele, a quienes amaba y apreciaba. De sus bisnietos, fue bendecida con siete tataranietos: Joel, Victor, Josiah, Nailah, Ava, Amari y Jaylee.

Cuando era niña, Carmen era una ávida feligresa y dijo que fue entonces cuando formuló su relación con Dios. En una ocasión durante el servicio de la iglesia, antes de que ocurriera la colecta de ofrendas, pensó en todos aquellos en situaciones de dolor y desamparo. Entristecida por no tener nada que ofrecer, Carmencita sabía que el poder de la oración podía manifestar la ayuda que no podía dar. Entonces, desesperada, cerró los ojos con fuerza, juntó las manos en oración e hizo una petición al Señor.

"Padre Dios, gracias por todo, y gracias por tu amor. Quiero pedirte algo grandioso, Dios mío. ¿Podrías ayudarme a poder ayudar a esos desafortunados? ¿Te importaría ayudarme con algo para ofrecerles? ¿Una canasta para llegar a los necesitados: los desamparados, los pobres, los enfermos, los discapacitados y los que tienen hambre? Por favor, Dios, ayúdame a poder ayudar. Amén “.

Al abrir los ojos, vio algo colocado en la plataforma donde estaba de rodillas. ¡Vio un centavo brillante! Con gran alegría, Carmencita recogió el centavo y esperó la canasta de ofrendas. Mientras se dirigía hacia ella, extendió su pequeña mano hacia la canasta y dejó que el centavo cayera en la canasta con gran amabilidad y humildad.
Esto continuó semanalmente hasta que su mente joven pensó que estaría bien comprar dulces con el centavo en lugar de ofrecérselos a los necesitados. Ella notó su error humano la semana siguiente cuando el centavo no apareció después de su oración. Ella reconoció su error y le pidió perdón a Dios. Aunque el centavo nunca volvió a aparecer, Dios le aseguró a Carmencita que escucharía sus pedidos y le enviaría ayuda de acuerdo a sus súplicas, sin importar las circunstancias.
Carmen testificó de la gran relación que tenía con Dios. Dijo que Papá Dios escucha nuestro corazón, nuestro dolor, nuestra glorificación de él, nuestras alegrías, nuestras peticiones y también nuestro último aliento.

Llevemos el recuerdo de Doña Carmen en nuestro corazón a través de actos de bondad y humildad. Porque incluso en sus últimos días, ni una sola vez oró por sí misma. En cambio, oró por la seguridad de su familia, amigos y el personal del hospital, ayudando a los necesitados.

Que su alma descanse en esa gran paz que solo el amor del Todopoderoso puede dar.
