Bhagrattie Latchana

August 14, 1940 — August 16, 2022

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Bhagrattie Claire Latchana  aka “Betty” of Bronx, New York, born in Georgetown, Guyana on August 14, 1940. She passed away peacefully at the age of 82 years old on August 16, 2022, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was the beloved wife of Leonard J. Latchana, daughter of the late Bhagalu & Phulbasi Persaud and sister of the late Edward, Patrick  & Juliet. She was the mother of  Julie, Eddie , Jenny,  Angie, Loreen, Nadira, Indira and Omwattie. She was the mother- in- law of Margaret, Gordon ,Derick, Wazir and Gopaul.

She was grandmother of 10 and great grandmother of 10.

Our mom was a phenomenal wife, woman of substance and character, a priceless mother, grandmother, and great grandmother, she was loved by all who had the opportunity to meet her, she was a dedicated Christian and a well-loved member of her church Action Christian Center International. The family values that our mom instilled in all of us will forever be in our hearts. We cherish every moment spent with her while she was on earth with us.

It is said in the Bible that Jesus fed the multitude with five barley loaves and two fish. Due to poverty, my mom did this with one loaf and one fish for eight children, every day and for many years in that old, old house yonder with the star-apple tree in front. She even gave up her share so that others can be fed.

Mothers bring us into the world and it is hard to imagine a life without them. They are with you when you take your first breath. They can help you navigate your life. And often you are with them when they take their last breath. Saying goodbye to your mother is heartbreaking. It can feel like you are alone in your grief. And learning to navigate life without their physical presence can be very difficult.

Please take a moment to look at the person next to you. You may know the person. Or you might be meeting them for the first time. We all come from different walks of life. The one thing we have in common is that we all cared about Bhagrattie Latchana . I am grateful to each of you for recognizing my mother as the wonderful woman she was. Thank you for taking the time to be here today.

This is not goodbye mom, this is see you later.
