Arrashid “Poppy” Haywood was born on July 29, 1977 to Georgia Turner and the late Haywood Perry Jr. at Albert Einstein hospital in the Bronx, NY. Poppy (as he was called) started his formal education at the Rose M Kennedy Center for early childhood education. He continued his education in the Bronx attending P.S. 110, P.S. 104, and Sebnc “The Best Of Me” program. Poppy overcame several obstacles in his life. At a very young age, doctors said that Poppy would never walk or be able to do anything for himself. In-spite of the doctor ’ s prognosis, Poppy grew up to be very independent. He had more sense than most; there wasn ’ t anything he couldn ’ t do for himself.
Poppy touched so many people ’ s lives simply because he was a joy to be around. To know him was to love him. Poppy was very loyal and he always looked out for his family even when his family thought they were looking out for him. Poppy loved many things, like his love of Pepsi. If he ever hit you up for a dollar to buy himself a Pepsi, consider yourself blessed. That meant that he liked you, trusted you or considered you family. Poppy also loved to eat. His favorite foods were Chinese food, white rice with butter and his all-time favorite, the McDonalds #2 meal. Poppy was best known for his love of music. His favorite station was 98.7 Kiss FM. Whenever music was playing you were sure to see Poppy singing, bouncing, clapping his hands, and rocking his body to the beat. Singing and dancing wasn ’ t all that Poppy was known for. He was also known for his upbeat raps which he would not hesitate to recite for you! Poppy loved to have a good time and make people laugh. Whenever you asked him how he was doing he would respond by saying “ Chilling like a motherfucker!” before asking you for some money to get him a Pepsi. It was truly a blessing to know, love and be loved by him! He will remain forever in our hearts!
Poppy was a true mama ’ s boy but he adored his father as well. He leaves behind to cherish his many memories his mother Georgia Turner, sister Lonje Cooper, brother-in-law Sam Cooper, sister Shenik Turner, sister Najah Velasquez, brother-in-law John Velasquez, sisters Indira Turner, Eiram Turner, Shakeirah Turner, brother Ari Turner, 17 nieces and nephews and a host of cousins, extended family members and friends. Loved ones preceded in death include: father Haywood Perry Jr., grandmothers Nellie Turner and Marie Beasley.
We know that everyone loved Poppy but he had a few special people that were very dear to his heart. These are people that have always shown up for him and are a true extension of his heart. His brothers from another mother Fontaine, Shakha, Jermaine; his sister Monty, his cousin Felicia, his second mother Aunty Rhonda and his extended family from his residence at St. Dominic and The Best of Me Program.
